Extending an existing house can throw up interesting challenges: how to meet the client’s brief while also respecting the neighbours right of light, complying with Planning and Building Control regulations and the particular context.
In this case, after exploring many alternative designs, the decision was made to build over an existing garage, carefully shaping the roof to minimise any impact on the neighbour and carefully detailing the work to stay sufficiently far from the boundary. Salvaged clay plain roof tiles, matching materials and windows ensured that the extension blends with the existing house.
